Who We Are

The Ancient Mariners Canoe Club is a group of seniors who share an interest in outdoor activities, particularly canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing and preserving the environment.

Members are aged 55 or over and must belong to one of the City of Cambridge 50+ Recreation Centres. The club is equally attractive to men and women; current membership is fairly evenly divided. Members come from all walks of life. Most, but not all, are retired.

Most of our activities are held mid-week, usually on a Tuesday. Mariners gather at our Boathouse in Riverbluffs Park, Cambridge, to register for the day’s outing.

Canoeing ability is not necessary to join the Club, but new members must attend an orientation session, and satisfactorily complete the mandatory training sessions in the pool and on the river.

The Canoe Club was formed in 1988 with approximately 20 members. Today we have 134 members.

The club is under the auspices of the City of Cambridge and run by a board of directors. The board consists of a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and the chairs of various operating committees.
